It was a pleasant day. The spring sun was warm and the breeze was sweet with the smell of fresh grass and freshly blooming wild flowers. The birds were singing proudly together, twirling about in little dances, and other little wild creatures were venturing from their home grateful that winter's cold grip had finally let up. It was quite a phenomenon for a dragon like Toothless, who was so used to the harsh cold of Berk, where even when the sun was out the world was still chilled and the wind still smelled like frost.
A small blue butterfly entered his line of vision and excitedly Toothless bounded after it, having never seen such an interesting little fluttering thing before. It had the colors of a bird, but it's wings didn't have feathers, and it was so small! Toothless warbled excitedly, lowering to the ground as the butterfly landed on a yellow flower, teasingly opening and closing it's wings slowly. He wiggled his haunches, ears pinned back and his pupils wide, and then used his powerful legs to leap across the ground. He landed right on top of the flower, paws crushing it to the ground, but unfortunately he missed.
The butterfly fluttered into the air a bit in front of the dragon's face, and Toothless watched it with eager eyes. He was prepared to go after it again, body already tensing as if about to run, but instead of flying off the butterfly landed right on the dragons nose. Toothless' ears went rigid and his green eyes became a bit cross eyed.
It was probably quite a comical sight, especially to his friend who was following close behind the dragon. See, Hiccup and Toothless had come here to come flying, testing out some of the modifications that the other had made to the saddle to make sure they were fixed well and were sturdy enough. Toothless had been so beside himself with the wonder of spring though, that as soon as the butterfly had entered his line of vision he had taken off like a wild cat would go after a rabbit or squirrel. He forgot all about the flight in the thrill and wonder of the little flying insect.
Suddenly there was the snap of a twig in the woods. Toothless whipped his head around towards it, pupils constricting and curling his lips a little. The butterfly was disturbed by Toothless' sharp movement and fluttered away, disappearing into the blue of the sky. Toothless let it go, attention focused on the movement in front of him, his teeth snapping out of his gums violently. He took a backwards step back towards his rider, spreading his wings out to their full berth and growling in warning to the unseen threat in the forest coming towards them.
